Hello! My name is Ronnette DeLao, and I am a very passionate Certified Lactation Educator. I have a deep passion for assisting families succeed in their breastfeeding journey. In addition to my CLE, I am currently pursuing my IBCLC with hopes to take the exam April 2023. I started my lactation education journey as a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor and Nutrition Educator for WIC. After two years of practice and dedication, I took the CLE course through CAPPA Academy and PASSED! I also have the honor working as the Chair for the Pueblo Breastfeeding Coalition and the Workplace and Child Care Team Lead for the Colorado Breastfeeding Coalition. As you can see, my passion for breastfeeding thrives in my daily life. I am a proud mommy to 4 beautiful children. In my spare time, I love spending time with my family and friends! My favorite thing to do is watch my children play sports. Together, they are involved in dance, soccer, basketball and Jiu Jitsu. When I am not attending their activities, I am helping others meet their lactation goals while offering endless lactation support!
I wish I knew everything I know now about breastfeeding when I had my first child. Unfortunately, I was a teen mom and did not have the lactation support or resources I needed to feel confident enough to start a breastfeeding journey. In fact, I remember the hospital staff reassuring me formula would be the best fit since I was a young mom still attending school. Not only did I not get the support I needed in the hospital, none of my family talked to me about breastfeeding; therefore, I assumed it wasn't for me. When my second child came along, I thought it was only fair to give her formula since my first child did not breastfeed. What a crazy reason, right?!
When I was pregnant with my third child, I had some complications that caused me to go into labor with him at 24 weeks. Because of the complications I endured, I knew I wanted to attempt to breastfeed. I knew that offering breast milk would be the best choice to keep my little man healthy and thriving. Once my son was born, we experienced some complications that made it difficult for him to feed at the breast. I had severe nipple discomfort, cracked/bleeding nipples, inadequate milk transfer, and my son also had a lip tie. All of these barriers led to formula supplementation because he was not gaining adequate weight. However, that did not stop me from continuing to offer breast milk. Although we faced some hard times, we were able to work together and I was able to breastfeed him for 15 months.
My true passion for breastfeeding came along with my fourth child. After returning to work 8 weeks postpartum, I experienced some unpleasant situations working for a company that did not accommodate my needs as a breastfeeding mother. I was forced to express milk in a bathroom, my expressed milk was getting tossed in the trash, and I was not allowed to express milk as often as I needed. Unfortunately, with everything that was happening and being away from my child for 10 hours a day, my supply started to vanish! Shortly after, my employment was terminated. Not only was I stressed because I worked for this company for almost 8 years, I was even more devastated because my supply was almost gone. I was not ready to give up! I attempted to nurse on demand and pump after feedings for extra stimulation. After a couple days things were not getting better, so I made myself an appointment and begged my doctor to prescribe me a galactagogue. After taking the prescribed medication for several days, my supply was back in swing and my breastfeeding journey was better than ever. At that moment I knew I wanted to help, educate, and support other breastfeeding mothers. I am pleased to say my daughter was exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months and continued to breastfeed while consuming solids until she was 5 years old. So, you can see I have plenty of experience breastfeeding into the toddler years as well.
I appreciate you taking the time to get to know me and learning about my passion for helping others in their breastfeeding journey. It would be my honor to help you reach your personal lactation goals.
